Down the Rabbit Hole

Interpersonal Focus: Poetry & Graphic Design

When tasked with the MYP Personal Project, I set out to develop a novel communication tool with the goal of enhancing deaf children's educational experiences via poetry. Throughout the duration of my project, I meticulously developed and designed a creative product that combines engaging poetic material with multimedia components and interactive activities. Through extensive collaboration with the deaf community and rigorous user testing, I was able to craft a product that not only enhances linguistic and cognitive development but also fosters a profound connection with language and emotions among its users. In preparation for this project, I interviewed a world-class poet, George Elliot Clarke, and an educational radiologist and teacher of the deaf, Kareem Ayman, who works at the Royalty Language School in Alexandria, Egypt. My project is an important step toward empowering deaf children and advancing inclusion in school by utilizing technology and creativity. My on-paper/graphic design tool was uploaded to OER (Open Educational Resources) Commons to encourage the use of my tool among deaf children worldwide.

Community Engagement: Charitable Endeavours

Justice Pour La Syrie (December 2022–April 2023)

Justice Pour La Syrie was a (student-run) initiative aiming to make a difference in Syria. When tasked with making a difference in my community as part of a French project, I went above and beyond my and my peers' expectations for the end result of said project: I created an official informative website regarding the events in Syria, along with social media pages (ex: Instagram, YouTube) in which I was able to collaborate with larger organizations, such as the York University Syrian Student Association (through Instagram). This was able to raise over $70 within just 4 months for Islamic Relief Canada’s Syrian Aid Campaign. This gained more attention, not only to Justice Pour La Syrie, but also to the tragic lack of human rights faced by entire communities around the world, who, by the end of the project, I developed a strong passion to make a change for.

Project Ramadan (Yearly-Run Initiative)

Yearly, my dear friend, Baran Mousavizadeh, and I plan a fundraising event at our school to benefit Islamic Relief Canada during the holy month of Ramadan. Through implementing a multifaceted strategy (selling cookies, bags of chips, and lemonade for $1 each while simultaneously playing the film "Aladdin" in the school dining hall for student entertainment), the campaign succeeded in raising more than $150 in total donations for the organization this year.

The Marwa Foundation (August 2023-Present)

The Marwa Foundation is a Not-for-Profit organization dedicated to helping feed families in need during the time of generosity and giving, Ramadan. Our mission is to ensure that neither a child nor a family are unable to break their fast during Ramadan. Working closely with the BIG Charity Law Group, I am avidly working on expanding The Marwa Foundation and its network to make as significant of an impact as possible.

TMS 2023-2024 Agenda Cover

In my fourth year of the MYP Programme, I was given the opportunity to design the cover for the 2023–2024 school year agenda; a task that required creativity, attention to detail, and an understanding of the school's identity. I created a visually appealing cover by combining vibrant colours and dynamic, geometric illustrations to suit the academic year's theme. Collaborating closely with the school administration and using Adobe Illustrator, I integrated their feedback to ensure the design connected with the student body as well as the faculty while also being visually appealing. This project brought out not only my competence in graphic design techniques, but also my ability to transform my ideas into successful products.

TMS 2023-2024 Yearbook Cover

In my fifth year of the MYP Programme, I was asked by the TMS Design Department and School Administration to design the yearbook cover for the 2023-2024 academic year. With much attention to detail and an adaptable design approach (as per the changing requests and input of the school administration), I created a cover that not only reflected the spirit of the school community but also functions as a timeless memento for both students and teachers. This project allowed me to demonstrate my creativity and technical graphic design abilities in the Adobe Creative Suite. I was again able to turn abstract ideas into expressive graphics, or, as I like to call it, creating something out of nothing.
